Our history

Open Door Community Church, Spryfield, Halifax

A small group of Christians came together to establish a church in the Spryfield area in 1967.  Initially meeting in homes, as the numbers grew there was a need to find a location that would accommodate them for Sunday school and Sunday morning and evening services.  After much prayer and lengthy searching, they were able to rent the then Masonic Hall on the Herring Cove Road.  As the congregation continued to grow in the early 1970's, they were able to purchase a piece of property on Aldergrove Drive and erect a building they named Bible Baptist Church.

In 1975, the congregation was led to start a Christian school, first known as Spryfield Christian Day School, and later Halifax Christian Academy. Both the church and school continued to grow through the 1970's, expanding to three Sunday services and in 1980 a wing was added to meet the size needs of the school.

As the school continued to grow, by the late 1980's it was decided to move Halifax Christian Academy out of the church building and operate it as an independent christian school.

During the 1990's, the congregation started on a new direction of community outreach, changing the name from Bible Baptist to Reachout Society for Humanitarian Aid, with the church operating under the name of Open Door Community.

In the early 2000's, the church direction changed again, slightly, to a stronger focus on individual growth in Christ and partnership with other Christian organizations.  The 2000's also saw a change in our worship service to a contemporary music style and teaching shared between pastoral leaders.

In 2008 the congregation provided temporary lodging for the Spryfield Boys and Girls youth club after their rental space experienced a fire. This temporary arrangement led to a permanent tenancy, with the Boys and Girls Club now sharing the building at 11 Aldergrove Drive.

We are involved locally with other congregations in the area, through joint events such as the joint Good Friday services and music concerts held as part of larger community celebrations.  We continue to enjoy a close relationship with Halifax Christian Academy, and globally support missions abroad, in China and Guatemala, as well as several North American based Christian outreach and humanitarian groups. The congregation continues to search for ways to make a positive difference, both for those who are part of the church family, and in the community as a whole, living out our love of God and man.
